General Purpose:

The Licensed Practical Nurse in Long Term Care performs total patient care services as directed. Measures, evaluates, administers and documents patient care. Contributes to patient care plans and informs Registered Nurse when appropriate. Provides direction and assigns duties to Certified Nursing Assistants in accordance with their skills and abilities. Actively responds to patient, physician and family requests. Advocates and ensures Patient Rights and Patient Privacy are upheld.

Essential Functions:

Medication administration, care management and gives direct patient care, such as bathing, dressing, and feeding patients, and assisting in examinations and treatments. Ability to lift, walk, carry and stand.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Oversees total patient care and works directly with other staff to assure provision of highest standards of care.

2. Compliance with the State of Nevada’s Nurse Practice Act, Hospital policies and rules/regulations.

3. Ability to organize and prioritize work to maintain harmonious daily workflow.

4. Check, pour, administer and document medications at appropriate times. Monitors effects and side effects of medications.

5. Works with intravenous medications and administer all routes of medications per Nevada State Board of Nursing criteria.

6. Administers and records treatments as ordered. Monitors progress toward expected outcomes of treatments.

7. Admits, transfers and discharge patients as required.

8. Reports changes in condition, laboratory results, unexpected occurrences to the RN and the physician.

Skills and Abilities Required

1. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
2. Language Skills – Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures.
3. Mathematical Skills – Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as dosages, percents, proportions, area circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
4. Reasoning Ability – Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
5. Supports philosophy, objectives and goals of the Emergency department.
6. Performs within limits of State Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Nurses, hospital policies and procedures.
7. Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty areas, orientation and teaching of staff.
8. Strives for excellence in patient care and, as necessary, challenges and/or corrects errors of peers to ensure patient safety and well being.

Education and Experience Required

1. Graduation from a recognized Practical Nurse Program.
2. Current licensure by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as an LPN.
3. IV certification within one year of employment.
4. Neat, well-groomed, professional appearance.
5. Capable both physically and mentally for close work with elderly patients, their families, nursing and medical staff.
6. Understands the need for confidentiality of information gained while performing the job.
Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.
